Dumpster rental vs junk removal comes down to who does the loading and how fast the job has to be finished. A dumpster rental puts a roll-off container on your property so you can fill it at your own pace over the rental period. Junk removal sends a crew to load your items and haul them off. Our recommendation is simple: if you can load it yourself over a few days, rent the roll-off, and if the job has to be done in one visit, have a crew load it.
How a Dumpster Rental Works
You pick a size, we deliver a roll-off container, and you fill it on your own schedule. Our containers come in 10, 20, 30 and 40 yards, and every rental includes seven days. Longer rentals are available if you call ahead, and if you finish early, call us and we pick it up.
Every size has a weight allowance as well as a volume, from 1.5 tons on a 10 yard to 4 tons on a 40 yard. Your quote covers delivery, pickup and disposal up to that weight. The container also needs a spot. The truck needs a straight approach about twice the container's length, plus overhead clearance to tilt it off, and a 10 or 20 yard fits most single driveways. You can compare dimensions and weight limits on our dumpster sizes page.
We set boards under the container's contact points on every drop, and you don't need to be home for delivery. A container on your own driveway doesn't need a permit. A spot on the street needs a right-of-way permit from the city, and we help you arrange it. See The Austin Dumpster Permit Rules That Decide Your Placement for details.
The tradeoff is labor. You or your crew carry everything to the container. On a remodel, that works in your favor, because debris goes straight from the room into the container as you work instead of piling up in the garage.
How Junk Removal Works
With junk removal, our crew loads your items and hauls them away. Nothing sits in your driveway for a week, and you aren't the one wrestling the old recliner or the dresser out of the house. You're paying for the crew's labor, so junk removal costs more than loading a roll-off yourself. Call for a quote on your pile.
Junk removal fits best when the pile already exists. The crew loads in one visit, so it suits items that are sorted and ready to leave. It's a poor fit for a project that keeps producing debris for days, because the haul has to wait until the work is finished.
Four Questions That Decide Between a Dumpster and Junk Removal
How Much Time You Have
If you have a weekend or a few evenings to load, rent the container. Our rule is that a roll-off costs less when you have time to load it yourself over a few days. When the space has to be empty by a closing date or a move-out, have a crew load it, or get a container delivered fast. Call by noon and we can usually deliver the same day, seven days a week, at the same price as a scheduled rental.
Who Is Doing the Lifting
If you have a couple of helpers and a dolly, the dumpster works. If the heavy pieces are more than your household can safely move, pay for the labor instead. The same goes for a family member handling a cleanout from out of town who can't spend days on site loading.
Whether the Load Is Heavy or Bulky
Concrete, brick, dirt, tile and roofing shingles are heavy for their size, so they belong in a 10 or 20 yard to stay close to the included weight. Furniture and household items take up space rather than weight, so size up for those. Wet drywall, carpet and pad weigh far more than dry, so tell us when debris is wet and we'll size it right. Remodel debris is the clearest dumpster job of all, because it's heavy and it comes out over days. Learn more in Why Weight Fills a Dumpster Before Volume Does.
Whether You Have Room for a Container
If there's no driveway the truck can reach, or you can't give up the spot for a week, junk removal skips the container entirely. If the only open spot is the street, a dumpster still works with a right-of-way permit.
Dumpster or Junk Removal for Common Jobs
Here's what we'd recommend for common jobs:
- A garage or single-room cleanout you can work through over a weekend is a dumpster job. A 10 yard holds a packed garage.
- A bath remodel fits a 10 yard, and a kitchen usually needs a 20. Have the container in place before demo starts so debris goes straight in.
- A whole-home cleanout before a sale usually needs a 20 or 30 yard. If family can load over a week, the container is the better buy.
- A handful of large items and nobody to carry them is a junk removal job.
- Storm and tree debris usually starts with a 20 yard, because wet debris is heavy.
The Middle Option: A Dumpster With Loading Help
Most comparisons treat this as either-or. When a cleanout is urgent, we can drop a roll-off and have our crew help load it. Loading help is an optional add-on, priced on top of the rental and quoted on the call.
This fits whole-house contents on a hard deadline, such as an eviction, a foreclosure or an estate cleanout before closing. You get a container sized for the whole job, and the heaviest lifting isn't on you. Our emergency cleanup service covers these jobs, with no emergency surcharge on same-day delivery.
What Can Go in the Dumpster
Our containers take furniture, household junk, remodel debris, drywall, flooring, shingles, yard waste and most appliances. They can't take asbestos, chemicals and solvents, wet paint and oils, batteries and electronics, tires, appliances with refrigerant, or medical waste. Set those items aside before you load, because they need a different disposal route. Our residential dumpster rental page covers home projects and sizing in more detail.
