How to Get Rid of Old Furniture in Austin

November 02, 2026

The City of Austin says there are currently no recycling or reuse options for furniture collected through its bulk collection, and it is in the process of opening a reuse warehouse to keep furniture out of the landfill. That makes the order of your options matter. A piece that still has use in it should be sold, given away or donated first, and the city's curb collection, a roll-off container or a hauling service should handle what is left.

How to get rid of old furniture depends on the condition of each piece, how many pieces there are, and whether you have help to carry them. A clean armchair is a quick listing. A garage with a sagging sectional, broken bookcases and household junk piled around them is a cleanout, and that is the job residential dumpster rental is built for.

Selling or Giving Away Furniture That Still Has Use

For gently used furniture, the City of Austin's advice is to rehome it before calling for collection. List it on an online marketplace or neighborhood app, sell it for a reasonable amount or offer it free, and let friends, family and coworkers know it needs a new home. Daylight photos, measurements and honest notes on wear help a listing move, and so does saying up front that the buyer brings the truck and the help.

Give every listing a deadline, and whatever hasn't moved by then goes to the next option instead of back into the garage. Pieces with stains, tears or pet odors are hard to rehome, so plan a different exit for those from the start. If the furniture is leaving because of a move, our post on decluttering before a move covers the timing for the whole house.

Donating Furniture to Thrift and Reuse Stores

Thrift stores, reuse stores and nonprofits that furnish homes accept furniture, but each one sets its own rules on condition and on which pieces it takes. Call before you load anything large, and ask whether they pick up or only take drop-offs.

The City of Austin manages the Austin Reuse Directory, which lists local places that accept donations of reusable items, along with shops that buy, sell and repair used goods. It is the most direct way to find an organization near you that will take a specific piece.

Austin Bulk Collection Takes Furniture by Appointment

Austin Resource Recovery collects furniture through its on-demand bulk collection for residential curbside customers. An appointment is required, and you book it through the Austin Recycles app or the city's online scheduler. Because furniture collected this way cannot currently be reused or recycled, the city asks residents to rehome or donate usable pieces first. Bulk collection won't take household trash or construction and remodeling debris, so a cleanout that mixes furniture with those materials needs another route.

Our post on what Austin's bulk collection will and won't take covers set-out rules, eligibility and the full refusal list, and current details are on Austin Resource Recovery's on-demand collection page. To compare the city route with a container, see bulk pickup or a dumpster rental.

A Dumpster Fits When Furniture Is One Part of a Cleanout

A roll-off makes sense when the furniture is only part of the job: an estate, a rental turnover, a whole-room clear-out, or a remodel where the old sofa goes out with the flooring and drywall. All of that can go into one container, with no sorting into curb piles and no appointment date to wait for, and you load it on your own schedule as each room is emptied.

Furniture and bulky items take space, not weight, so choose the container by volume, not by how heavy the load feels. Our dumpster sizes page shows each container's dimensions side by side. We lay boards under the container wherever it rests on the driveway. If the surface is pavers, stamped concrete or freshly poured, mention it when you book so the spot can be planned around it.

A Hauling Crew Fits When Nobody Can Carry It Out

Loading a container yourself means carrying every piece out of the house. When there is no one to do the lifting, the furniture sits upstairs behind tight turns, or the space has to be empty in a single visit, a service that does the carrying is a better match than a container. For options when the lifting is the problem, see junk removal and bulk pickup. The post on dumpster rental vs. junk removal compares the two approaches by time, labor and the shape of the project.

Getting a Couch Out of the House and Into the Container

Knowing how to get rid of a couch mostly means knowing how to get it through the door. Before anyone lifts, measure the doorway, hallway and any stair turn against the couch. Then pull the cushions, unscrew the legs and remove any detachable arms or back. Sectionals usually unhook into separate pieces, so one awkward carry becomes several manageable ones.

The rest of the room works the same way. Dressers and cabinets are lighter and safer to move with the drawers out, and bed frames, tables and shelving break down with basic tools. Broken-down pieces stack flatter, too, which leaves more room in the container. Planning the carry like this is how to dispose of a couch without damaging walls, floors or backs on the way out.

What Stays Out of the Container With the Furniture

A couch can go in a dumpster: furniture is accepted in our residential dumpsters along with household junk and remodel debris, but a furniture cleanout tends to turn up things that cannot go in a roll-off. Batteries and electronics, wet paint and oils, chemicals and solvents, tires and anything containing asbestos all stay out. Set them aside as you clear each room so they don't end up buried under a couch. The full list is on our items we can't take page. For many of those leftovers, Austin Resource Recovery offers a separate household hazardous waste collection for curbside customers.

Booking a Container for a Furniture Cleanout

If you are working out how to get rid of old furniture in Austin, try reuse first and match the rest to the size of the job. One good piece belongs in a listing or a donation. A room or a whole house of furniture mixed with other debris belongs in a container you can load on your own schedule. When you are ready, schedule a delivery online or call (512) 688-7000, and tell us what is going in so we can help match the container to the job.
